1970 - Tutoring services at Ferris State University began as a directive of Project Apollo
under the supervision of Daniel Burcham.
- 1975 - Tutorial Services was established as a branch of Student Development Services in
the College of Arts and Sciences and was located in the Starr Building.
- 1978 - Virginia Birnie coordinated Tutorial Services.
- 1989 - Judith Hooper appointed coordinator of Tutorial Services.
- 1995 - Tutorial Services combined with the Academic Skills Center to become the Academic
Support Center and was housed temporarily in Helen Ferris Hall.
- 1996 - The Academic Support Center moved to its new home in the Arts and Science Commons.
Kate Quinlan appointed supervisor of the Center.
- 1997 - The Academic Support Center became one of the charter programs in the newly established
University College. Jane Pole appointed co-supervisor of the Center.
- 1999 - Arlene Krellwitz appointed co-supervisor.
- 2000 - Obtained tutor training certification in the internationally acclaimed College
Learning and Reading Association program. Began collaborative program with UNIV instructors.
- 2001 - First recipient of the Ferris State University Distinguished Team Award.
- 2003 - Received the National Tutoring Association program excellence award.
- 2005 - Article published as a result of the collaboration between ASC and UNI instructors.
Hosted the Michigan Tutorial Association annual.
Mission Statement
To provide all Ferris students access to a variety of academic skill-building opportunities
that will assist them in their pursuit of academic excellence in a format that accommodates
various learning preferences and schedules.
