The University expects that both faculty and students will honor these principles and in so doing protect the validity of University grades. This means that all academic work will be done by the student to whom it is assigned, without unauthorized aid of any kind. Instructors, for their part, will exercise care in the planning and supervision of academic work, so that honest effort will be positively encouraged.
If any instance of academic dishonesty is discovered by an instructor, it is his or her responsibility to take appropriate action. Depending on his or her judgment of the particular case, he or she may give a failing grade to the student on the assignment or for the course.
Instructors will report all instances of academic dishonesty to their department head.
In instances where a failing grade in a course is given only for academic dishonesty, the instructor will notify the student's academic dean in writing of the circumstances.
The student who receives a failing grade based on a charge of academic dishonesty may appeal to the department head. The appeal must be in writing.
The department head will forward the appeal to the instructor who will respond in writing.
On the basis of the student's appeal and the instructor's response, the department head will inform the parties in writing of his or her decision.
In the event that the student or instructor is dissatisfied with the decision of the department head, he or she may further appeal the decision to the Dean's office. A cover letter with copies of the original appeal, the instructor's response, and the department head decision must be submitted to the Dean's office.
The Dean's office will establish an ad hoc committee composed of a representative of the Dean's office and two faculty representatives from the Standards and Policy Committee to review the appeal. The committee may request additional documentation and/or call for any ad hoc members to assist in the appeals process. The committee will issue its recommendations to the dean, whose decision is final and binding.
