Dr. Patten teaches a wide variety of communication courses ranging from honors and introductory public address, to leadership, conflict management, listening, technical and professional communication, cross-cultural communication, innovation and change, interpersonal communication, persuasion, speechwriting and political communication.

He publishes and presents conference papers on topics including historical public address, service learning, litigation consulting, popular culture and speechwriting.

He is faculty advisor for the Ferris Communication Association, a member of the National Communication Association Student Clubs, and serves on NCASC's national executive board.

He teaches weekend graduate courses in communication for a sister institution and is a senior faculty member for the Junior Statesmen Foundation at Yale, Stanford and Princeton universities during the summer.
