Level 1

Level 1 courses were created for ESL students who have received some English language instruction in their home countries and have some, although limited, English proficiency. Students at this level may still struggle with their survival English skills and having conversations in English. For this reason, students at this level are taught basic interaction skills as well as academic English skills.

Students who obtain Level 1 are already able to:

  • Identify the basic parts of speech (noun, verb, adverb, adjective)
  • Understand basic sentence rules (capitalization, punctuation, word order)
  • Know the difference between concrete and abstract nouns
  • Know the difference between action and non-action verbs
  • Use the simple present tense
  • Know and use personal subject pronouns
  • Use some prepositions
  • Know the alphabet and sound letter correlations
  • Write several sentences on the same topic
  • Have basic phonetic, dictionary, and word structures skills
  • Understand basic vocabulary from context
  • Read and identify numbers, common nouns, verbs, and pronouns
  • Skim, scan, and read short, simplified texts for main ideas and some details
  • Listen to and understand repeated speech at a reduced speed and understand main ideas and some details from simplified speech
  • Understand and produce basic consonant and vowel sounds
  • Introduce themselves, use basic greetings, share likes and dislikes, and ask simple questions
