Academic Bridge Course
This course has been designed for advanced English language learners who have missed
the TOEFL cut off by 25 points or less. Students taking this course will take two
other Level 3 IEP courses and one regular course at Ferris. The Bridge Course integrates
grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening into one course and focuses on
how to apply those skills in the academic setting. Some activities students will complete
in this course include taking notes, writing essays, conducting research, giving presentations,
and conducting discussions.
Conversation Practicum
This course has been designed to offer students a more intensive conversation partner
experience. The IEP offers up to 4 hours of conversation partnerships for all IEP
students; however, some students ask for more. This class is for students who wish
for more conversation practice. In this class, the IEP student is partnered with a
native English speaker for one-on-one conversations and participates in community
and campus events. The purpose is to practice and improve English language skills
AND to learn about American culture.
Service Learning Practicum
This course has been designed for students who wish to take more credits in an intensive
English setting. Students enrolled in this course will participate in service learning
activities. This includes volunteering in events on campus and in the community. Students
will also be asked to reflect on each event and discuss what they have learned both
linguistically and culturally. This classes requires students to use their grammar,
reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
Independent Study
This course has been designed for students who wish to take more credits in an intensive
English setting. Like many independent study courses, the student and the instructor
decide on course goals. The teacher then decides on instruction and content for the
student. Even though this is an independent study course, the approach to teaching
and learning is still integrated, which means that students will learn English using
their grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills.
