Dr. D. William Lakin, of Clinton Township was appointed to the Ferris State board of Trustees for a term ending December 31, 2014, filling the seat previously held by Patrick W. La Pine.

Dr. Lakin is managing partner and senior Optometrist of Family Eye Care Associates. The practice consists of five optometrists with offices in Clinton Township, Eastpointe, and Washington Twp. Comprehensive eye care services including pediatric eye care, routine eye health and vision examinations, complete contact lens care, pre and post surgical care for refractive surgery and cataract patients, treatment of ocular disease and low vision services are provided at each location.

Dr. Lakin has served on the board of directors of the Michigan Optometric Association (MOA) and as its president in 1995-1996. In 1996 he was recognized as Optometrist of the Year by the MOA. Dr. Lakin has also been in state and national legislative issues affecting health care and the profession of Optometry. He has served as a board member for VISION USA, a national non-profit agency that assists limited income families in receiving eye care. The offices also provide eye care when needed to patients of the Neighbors Caring for Neighbors Clinics in Macomb County. Currently Dr. Lakin serves as Vice Chairperson of the State Board of Examiners in Optometry.

In 2008 the Macomb County Commissioners recognized Dr. Lakin's past and present community service with a Commissioners Volunteer Award. Later in the year he also received a Henry Ford Macomb Hospital Community Volunteer Award. Community Service activities that Dr. Lakin is currently affiliated with include:

  • Macomb Food Program board member
  • Henry Ford Macomb Hospital School Health Team volunteer
  • Neighbors Caring for Neighbors Clinic volunteer
  • Chairperson of the Clinton Twp Kiwanis Annual Community Food Drive

Dr. Lakin and his wife Jean have lived in Macomb County for 28 years. Jean is an extension educator with Michigan State University. They have two sons. Jeffrey is pursuing a Law degree at the University of North Carolina. Scott is completing a graduate degree in Architecture and Community Development at the University of Detroit Mercy.
