How to Apply

The application for entering class 2016-2017 is open. To ensure full consideration, please submit your application by Feb 1st, 2016. Applications after Feb 1st, 2016 will be reviewed, but are subject to space limitations.

First Year Students

Admissions criteria - Students who have applied to Ferris State University and meet at least two of the following three criteria are invited to apply directly to the Honors Program:

  • Cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • 25 ACT composite or 1135 SAT (combining Math and reading scores) or higher.
  • Ranked in the top 10% of graduating class by GPA.

Students who are close to meeting the criteria for invitation and have records of significant and meaningful extracurricular academic achievement (Odyssey of the Mind, Editor of Student Newspaper / Yearbook, Debate/Forensics, etc.), outstanding community service or exemplary leadership positions will be considered for invitation following individual review of those credentials by the Honors Program staff.

To complete an application to the Honors program, each student must submit:

  • A completed application. (application for 2016-2017 opened August 20, 2015)
  • A complete and scored essay written at the Honors Invitational event (students who cannot attend the annual Invitational may be permitted to complete the essay under the supervision of a high school guidance counselor or other educator).

Being invited to apply to the Honors program is no guarantee of admission to the Honors program. Students are evaluated on all measures before admission is granted.

A student must be admitted to Ferris State University to be admitted to the Honors program. If you have not completed an Undergraduate Student application to Ferris State University, you will need to do that in order for your Honors application to remain valid. Transfer students & students already enrolled at Ferris

Transfer students may join the Honors program after at least one semester is completed at Ferris (called 'internal transfers') or from an institution other than Ferris. Students must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or greater in at least 12-45 credits, none of which can be remedial. Honors courses take at other institutions may count for our requirements, but need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

In order to be admitted to the Honors Program International students must have:

  • TOEFL score of 525 or better (if English is not the first language).
