Inquiries into Teaching and Learning: Seeking Answers to Important Questions

About the Project

All Ferris faculty (tenure-track and non-tenure track alike) are invited to participate in systematic assessment of teaching and student learning as part of FCTL's Inquiries into Teaching and Learning project. This Inquiries project supports faculty who are interested in examining teaching and student learning in a course with or without multiple sections, or in the overall academic program. If you are interested in focusing on a multi-section course or your academic program, we strongly encourage that your colleagues be involved with you in this project.

This principle aim of the project, like that first articulated by Walvoord and Anderson (1998) and, later, by Savory et al. (2007), is "to help you approach your own teaching in a more structured fashion, as you investigate teaching (and learning) questions that you really care about, that cycle back into your teaching for improved student learning, that are embedded within a specific classroom context, and that you may have encountered over successive course offerings." Participation in the Inquiries project can be useful for gathering assessment data that you can use to improve a course and students' learning; it can also be a part of your scholarly work in teaching and learning.

In Spring 2012 (Phase I), we invite you to develop a plan for investigating one or two important questions about your teaching or your students' learning. You will implement the plan in the Summer or Fall 2012 semester (Phase II).

To develop your plan, you will work individually and with other participants to:

  • Identify one or more "points of inquiry," that is, specific questions about your teaching or your students' learning that you wish to examine.
  • Review published research and other literature related to your question(s)
  • Identify or develop assessment tools or methods to collect information that will provide answers to your question(s)
  • Establish a timeline for carrying out this work in the Summer or Fall 2012 semester.
