January 18, 2012 - Video Resource Tools

Not enough class time to prepare your students with everything they need to know to be successful? Looking for fresh new ideas for your online class? This session will review the use of video tutorials such as: Atomic Learning, Lynda, TED, and YouTube as a tool to help prepare students and faculty to get to the next level. 

Attendees will:

  • Discover how to access these various video resources
  • Explore ways these tools could be used:
    • In the classroom
    • In an online course
    • For professional development
    • Acknowledge how faculty are using these tools
    • Chat about pedagogical ways tutorial videos could be used to help students reach learning outcomes

January 25, 2012 - Blackboard Mobile: Learning at Your Fingertips

Presented by Jackie Hughes and Mary Holmes 

Imagine a classroom without walls. Learning does not have to happen in the classroom. Faculty can use Blackboard Mobile Learn to take the classroom out into the world and to keep students engaged as they experience online content and collaboration anywhere they go. 

Attendees will:

  • Find out how to download and navigate Blackboard Mobile Learn
  • Review how other faculty use Mobile Learn
  • Chat about pedagogical ways the tool could be used to enable students to reach learning outcomes

February 1, 2012 - Respondus

Presented by Faculty Panel

Stop grading and start teaching! Electronic testing tools, such as Respondus, can free up faculty’s time because there is no need to print or grade tests and students can take tests outside of the classroom! Come hear how a panel of Ferris faculty is using the Respondus testing tool with FerrisConnect.

  • Watch short demonstrations on how various faculty use Respondus
  • Learn about the Respondus Lock-down Browser component

The Tegrity video recording tool can help you to maximize your time and your efforts. Come learn how you can get recordings of your class time and make them available online to be viewed over and over.

February 15, 2012 - Skype

Faculty can go the extra mile using Skype! Everyone is so busy and it is hard to find the time and place to meet with some students. Skype is a free video conferencing tool faculty could use to bring a special guest speaker into the classroom or to meet with a commuter student within the office. Come see how easy Skype is to use and hear how other faculty have used Skype to go the extra mile!

February 22, 2012 - Google+

Presented by Andrew Peterson

Traditionally video chat has been accomplished through one-to-one video sessions. Google+, and specifically the Google Hangout option allows for a video session with multiple people at the same time. During this session we will play around with the software and see how it can be incorporated into distance learning.

February 29, 2012 - CPS Clickers

Presented by Amy Buse

Clickers are an anonymous polling tool that allows faculty to ask students questions without putting them on the spot.  Come see how clickers can be used to help faculty make adjustments to the class to meet student needs and reach learning outcomes.

March 14, 2012 - Google Scholar, Forms Voice, Translate

Google has a vast array of tools. Traditionally we might make use of the search function and maybe e-mail. It is the goal of this session to demonstrate a couple of the cool tools you should be aware of.

Attendees will:

  • Search for academic resources using Google Scholar
  • See examples of Google Forms
  • Use Google Translate
  • See some fun ways of using Google Voice
  • Chat about how these Google tools could help students reach the learning objectives

March 21, 2012 - Poll Everywhere

Have you ever stared into the expressionless eyes of the students in your classroom and wonder if they understood the concept you have just elaborately explained? Poll Everywhere is an anonymous polling tool similar to clickers, but without the costly clicker device. Come hear about how Pharmacy’s Poll Everywhere pilot went last semester and how it is being used this semester.

  • Respond to some polls using their mobile device or laptop

March 28, 2012 - Game-Based Learning

Presented by Andrew Peterson

In this session we will spend time examining successful game development and discuss how it relates to curriculum development. Strategies on implementing games into existing lessons will be presented. Standards and assessment tools will be reviewed. Pedagogical shifts with the devaluation of information will be discussed. Roles of teachers in classrooms will be debated. We will highlight literacy’s transformation from a passive consumption of information to an active creation of content.

April 4, 2012 - Social Media

If you can’t beat them, then join them! Tweet during class! Engage your students inside and outside of the classroom using social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter. Faculty across the nation have already incorporated social media tools into their lesson plans. Come hear how others are using social media to enable students to reach learning outcomes and what the research says about its effectiveness.

  • Consider strategies to keep students engaged in the class while using social media

April 11, 2012 - Presentation Tools

We have all experienced “Death by PowerPoint” some time in our life. Whether you want to find invigorating tools to use when presenting course content in your lecture or you want to teach your students to deliver a creative presentation using innovative tools… this session is for you! Even online faculty can use tools such as Jing, Animoto, Slideshare, Prezi, and Popplet to spice up the course and prepare students to create engaging presentations.

Attendees will:

  • Analyze how each of these tools work
  • Hear how other faculty have used these tools in their class and the impact it had on their students
  • Chat about pedagogical ways the tools could be used engage students

April 18, 2012 - Getting the Most out of Your Textbook

The semester is almost over and it is time to start thinking about updating the curriculum for your Fall 2012 course. It is a good time to review the digital material textbook publishers have available and how it can be embedded right into your FerrisConnect Learn course. Come hear a faculty panel share how they are connecting textbook media with their classes.

April 25, 2012 - iTunes U

Presented by Tracey Boncher and Scott Claerhout 

iTunes is a free universal media repertoire that most students carry around with them on the mobile device in their pocket or the laptop in their backpack. Ferris has joined hundreds of other institutions on iTunes U to allow faculty to serve up videos or podcasts to students in a particular course. Load the media up once and it will always be available for future classes to download and listen to on the go.

Attendees will:

  • Learn how to get an iTunes U account and how the tool works
  • Hear how faculty use this tool to help their students to reach learning outcomes
  • Chat about other ways iTunes U could be used
