Communication Tools

Monday, September 10 from 11:00 - 12:30 in FLITE 438
Tuesday, October 9 from noon - 1:30 in FLITE 438
Friday, November 2 from 11:30 - 1:00 in FLITE 438

During this fireside chat we will be showing off ways to do virtual office hours. Faculty need not be tied to their office just to meet face-to-face with their students. Often online students don’t even have a way to make it to a traditional office. With a simple webcam and headset you can chat with students anytime and anywhere (assuming high speed internet is available). Specifically we’ll look at Skype and Google+ hangout for enhancing our communication with students and peers.

Game Based Learning

Monday, September 17 from 11:00 - 12:30 in FLITE 438
Tuesday, October 16 from noon - 1:30 in FLITE 438
Friday, November 9 from 11:30 - 1:00 in FLITE 438

In this session, we will spend time examining successful game development and discuss how it relates to curriculum development. Strategies on implementing games into existing lessons will be presented. Standards and assessment tools will be reviewed. Pedagogical shifts with the devaluation of information will be discussed, and roles of teachers in classrooms will be debated. We will highlight literacy’s transformation from a passive consumption of information to an active creation of content.

Session Recording

Monday, September 24 from 11:00 - 12:30 in FLITE 438
Tuesday, October 23 from noon - 1:30 in FLITE 438
Friday, November 16 from 11:30 - 1:00 in FLITE 438

Certain rooms on campus have been designed to record lectures or meetings. The most common method of doing this is a software title called Tegrity. We will spend the majority of the time looking at the configuration and usage of this tool. Some of the time will be dedicated to talking about best practices in making your lectures available to students.

Screen Sharing

Monday, October 1 from 11:00 - 12:30 in FLITE 438
Tuesday, October 30 from noon - 1:30 in FLITE 438
Friday, November 30 from 11:30 - 1:00 in FLITE 438

My life was made much easier by a website called “Join Me”  http://join.me  This site uses a web interface to allow two people to view each other’s computer screens. This works great for sharing content or having a student try and explain a complex problem. This free application will be demoed and best practices will be discussed.
