Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity in Teaching and Learning: Issues that Affect the College Classroom, Spring 2008

Over dinner, we will discuss readings that explore issues related to diversity in the college classroom such as inclusion, culturally-responsive teaching, and other sociocultural phenomena that bear on Ferris students' experience and learning. We'll draw upon the opinion, experiences, and research of others in books and other resources such as:

• Teaching for Diversity and Social Justice (2007), Adams, Bell, Griffin (eds.)
• Diversity Across the Curriculum: A Guide for Faculty in Higher Education (2007), Branche, Mullennix, and Cohn (eds.)

The conversations will be casual and the dinners will sooth both the palette and the soul.

Logistics

Meeting dates and times: The discussion group will meet for three weeks on Tuesdays beginning April 8th from 4:30 to 6 PM. The first meeting, at least, will be in IRC 104. Dinner will be provided and participants will receive a copy of one of the books.

Session materials:

• April 8, 2008 - We discussed an excerpt on "Moral Conversation" from How to Talk About Hot Topics on Campus: From Polarization to Moral Conversation [Nash, Bradley, Chickering (eds.), 2008]. We also discussed a YouTube video.
• April 15, 2008 - We discussed, "Creating Inclusive College Classrooms."
• April 22, 2008 - We discussed "Reducing the Gender Gap in the Physics Classroom" and "Faculty Learning on Diversity: Challenges to the Professor."
