What’s New with Ferris State Housing?

A message from the Director of Housing:

Message from Director of HousingWelcome to on-campus housing where living and learning merge for success!  The Office of Housing and Residence Life is pleased to announce some exciting changes for 2009-2010.

East Campus Housing
Watch us grow! With the close of the Spring 2009 semester the era of East Campus Apartments came to a close.  Buildings A-G east of Ives Street and north of Damascus Drive saw their last students check out during the second week of May.  Ferris State students, faculty and families have called these buildings home for nearly 50 years.  They are being retired to make way for the newest concept of campus housing, the East Campus Suites, opening Fall 2010. Located on the same east campus property, with the quiet wooded surroundings, the East Campus Suites will surely become the housing of choice for generations of Ferris State students to come.

East Campus Suites

East Campus Suites will neither be residence halls nor apartments.  Rather, this new style of on-campus housing combines the best of both worlds.  Each of the three 3-story buildings, yet to be named, will be home to 100 students.  Each building will have 4 entrances located on both the front and back and on either end of the building.  Exterior doors will be locked 24/7 utilizing the same card swipe access and blue light/call box phone security system as our residence halls.  Each building will house 24 4-bedroom suites and 2 2-bedroom suites. Every student will have their own furnished bedroom and will share a full bathroom with one other student. A furnished living room and full kitchen compliment the feeling of home each suite provides

Other amenities:

  • Air conditioned throughout
  • Accessible Suites
  • Entry lobby will be utilized for common gathering space
  • Elevators in each building
  • Laundry room on second floor
  • Study/activity lounge on third floor with commanding views of the beautiful surroundings
  • 24/7 locked doors for security
  • All guests must be escorted by a resident of the building at all times

Like our on-campus apartments, the East Campus Suites are designed as 9½ month single student housing for the fall and spring semesters.  East campus suites are for students who will be 20 years of age or older by the first day of classes in the fall semester. Students living on campus (apartments and residence halls) during the 2009-2010 academic year will have priority to be the first to live in the East Campus Suites starting in the 2010-11 academic year. Watch for more details in the coming months.

24 Hour Quiet Floor
While every residence hall community is expected to exercise 24 hour courtesy to neighbors, the 2009-2010 academic year will see the return of a 24-hour quiet environment.  Students choosing to live on the 3rd floor of Miller Hall will experience an environment specifically dedicated to those who require a quieter living environment for studying and concentration as well as through medical referral.  The 24-hour quiet hall floor is a double room floor, meaning 2 students are assigned to each room.  A select number of private rooms are available on a first come-first served basis.

Miller

Miller Hall is the ideal living environment for a 24 hour quiet floor as Miller is also home to the Substance-Free and Health & Wellness living environments.  As a substance free hall, residents choose to live in an environment free of alcohol and other drugs, including tobacco.  The concept of healthy living is further promoted in the health and wellness programming promoted by the residence hall staff.  See our residence hall descriptions for more information on these programs.  Please contact the Housing Office to request Miller Hall as your preferred home away from home.

Security Upgrade
With the start of the Fall 2008 semester Ferris State University unveiled a new residence hall security system placing us on the cutting edge of residence hall safety.  Residents will note that all residence hall entrance doors are locked 24 hours each day.  Bulldog ID Cards Blue light phonesswiped at the doors allows access for residents of each building.  Visitors to the building, including parents, may utilize the call-box style telephone at the front entrance to each building to contact the resident they intend to visit.  To preserve the integrity of the security system, the host must come to the door to greet their guest and escort him or her back to their room.  All guests in the residence halls must be escorted by their host throughout the time they are visiting the building.  The escort and visitation polices are noted in the Student Handbook.  These are important behavioral expectations for students in addition to being integral components of Residence Hall security.

The call-box telephones should further enhance a feeling of safety on campus as each is also equipped as a “blue light” emergency phone.  Each blue light phone allows immediate contact with the Department of Public Safety at the push of the red “EMERGENCY” button.  Students are encouraged to utilize the phones any time they feel threatened or unsafe in the campus community.  Over thirty new blue light phones were added to campus last year.

Residents are expected to carry their Bulldog ID and room key at all times.  Please lock your door any time you leave your room, even if just for a few minutes.  Personal belongings such as laptops, ipods, cameras, wallets and game systems have been stolen from unlocked rooms, even when the resident was just across the way or down the hall doing laundry.  Our lock systems work well but they must be utilized to be effective.  Ferris State has not experienced a theft from a locked room.

Security systems are only as effective as students will allow them to be.  When entering your residence hall please do not allow others to “tailgate” or follow you into the hall without utilizing their Bulldog ID card to unlock the door.  Students may not prop open any entrance to the hall, and any attempts to disengage security systems will be dealt with through the Office of Student Conduct.  All students are asked to do their part to keep our campus and their residence hall secure.  The partnership and cooperation are greatly appreciated.

What’s next?
The voices of students are a major influence in the improvements that are made to on-campus living.  If you have ideas of how Residence Life can make things better, please let us know.  The best means of doing so is to become active in your house government, be part of the Hall Council, or serve with the campus-wide Residence Hall Association, the student governing organization for on-campus students.  Please check with your Resident Advisor and Hall Director to learn how you can get involved to have a say in the future of Residence Life.
