Below is a list of steps to successfully prepare yourself for an employment
interview. To learn more about interview preparation, visit the Student
Employment Services
office and utilize our books, videos, and additional hand-outs on the subject.
The Interview that will get you the Job
Keep in mind that what's most important is getting the job that is best for
you.
Focus on interviewing to get a second interview.
Be prepared to answer questions with specific examples of your direct
experience or expertise - turn around "what if" questions.
Remember, the interview is as much for you as it is for the potential
employer.
Make sure you have good eye contact and a firm handshake.
Always arrive 10 minutes early to give yourself plenty of time.
Dress appropriately.
Be prepared - know the organization and its staff - much of this information
is available from libraries and the organization itself.
Rehearse - try visually rehearsing - picture yourself successfully completing
the interview and accepting the job. This reduces fear, prepares you and might
even get you the job.
Be prepared to give a brief description of your skills, job experience, and
interest in the potential position.
Think of the interview as a healthy conversation between individuals with a
common interest.
Bring a copy of your resume.
Don't "sell" - let the other person "buy" - invite them
to answer your questions and "feel invested in the process."
Take time to think of the best answer - it's okay if there is a lull in the
conversation.
Prepare questions that will give you the information you need and will lead
the employer into your area(s) of strongest expertise.
Be honest and diplomatic.
Be positive even if you are frustrated with your inability to find a job.
Be sure to send a thank you note
following the interview!
