The Fire That Changed Ferris (and Big Rapids) Forever

This academic year will mark the 60th anniversary of the fire that destroyed "Old Main," our original building located on the corner of Oak and Ives (present location of the Prakken Building). The cause of the fire that nearly wiped out our entire campus is still undetermined.

Ferris is fortunate to have many experts on staff, including Captain James Cook of the Department of Public Safety. Jim provided his expert point of view, along with the presentation of several witnesses as he examined the evidence. Special guest Robert Andrews retold his compelling story of helplessly watching his friend become trapped by the falling ceiling and bricks of Old Main while attempting to salvage equipment from the fire.

Theories were discussed, but ultimately, we can only speculate the true reason for the fire.
