Industrial to Institute
Ferris Industrial School became Ferris Institute in 1898 as a result of the addition of professional programs such as pharmacy. This was not without controversy, as the alumni of the "Industrial" were very much against it. Even Woodbridge Ferris was relunctant to change the name, but public pressure won out in the end. The name "Institute" endured until 1963, when another controversial name change would occur.
