Celebrating 125 Years
Woodbridge N. and Helen Gillespie Ferris arrived 125 years ago in the small rural community of Big Rapids to found the Big Rapids Industrial School – what is today Ferris State University. Michigan was in a transitional economy, and our founders saw an opportunity for a school that would give displaced loggers, the children of farmers, miners and others an opportunity to learn new ways to make a living. Following the progressive and practical principles they both learned at Oswego Normal College (now the State University of New York at Oswego), the Ferris’ set about fulfilling their mission “To Make the World Better.”
As we begin celebrating our 125th year, we look back at an institution that has endured challenges that seemed insurmountable. From diminishing enrollment following two world wars, the Great Depression, crippling bank failures and a catastrophic fire, we have emerged as an institution that is in a unique position to once again redefine Michigan’s economy. Woodbridge and Helen’s vision has resulted in more than 170 hands-on degrees that are shaping tomorrow’s workforce and making us the University for Michigan’s future.
Join us as we celebrate 125 years of Ferris State University!
